Bladder Flask - One Day I Was So Sad That The Corners Of My Mouth Met & Everybody Thought I Was Whistling

Sonaria, 2001 (re-release, originaly from 1981)

The album was released in 1981 in a numbered edition of 500 on the obscure Orgel Fesper Music (001) label , the album is comprised of two 25-minute side-long tracks of extended Dadaist reverie, a sublime mixage of musique concrete and instrumental collage. Bladder Flask and their ilk were spiritual forefathers to today's "Clicks & Cuts" generation. Incredibly, this sounds as fresh and startling today as it must have sounded 20 years ago.Bladder Flask was created by the Rupenus brothers, aka The New Blockaders. This is the CD version from 2001 that was released on Sonaria (SON 5.01) in Poland. Remastered from vinyl at Glistening Labs. Edition Of 500 Copies.

The Leather Nun - Slow Death EP

(This is the original cover)
. originaly released on industrial records, 1979 .

The Leather Nun formed in Gothenburg, Sweden, in 1979. Their first record is the 'Slow Death' 7" released on Industrial Records. It shows the bands more punky side as well as their experimental one which they would later abandon.
On this mini album, the first side is the 'Slow Death' 7" but 'Ensam I Natt' is featured in it's full version here. Only the intro of that song is featured on the original 7". 'Ensam I Natt' was also released as 7" on Sista Bussen in 1982.
The B side contains a 15+ minutes live version of 'Slow Death' taken from the 'Live At Scala Cinema' cassette also released on Industrial Records. On this track, the band got help from Genesis P-Orridge on violin and Monte Cazazza on synthesizer.
The band went on to release some decent singles and the 'Alive' album, but I lost interest in the band after these. Some people will remember their version of the ABBA classic 'Gimme,Gimme,Gimme'.
The 'Slow Death' MLP was originally issued on the Criminal Damage label in 1984 and was later reissued on Wire Records in 1986.

Iphar, 1982

Philip Best is the pioneer of power electronics who formed the trailblazing Consumer Electronics in 1982 at age 14.

He joined the group Whitehouse, led by William Bennett, in 1983.

After a nine-year hiatus starting in 1984, Best rejoined Whitehouse and has remained with the group ever since.

In the early 1980s Best also ran his own DIY label Iphar, releasing compilations of power electronics. Through the circulation of these controversial cassettes he succeeded in promoting the burgeoning extreme noise genre.

Ramleh - The Hand of Glory

Broken Flag, 1983

Fuck the reissue... here it is in all of it's 7" single crackle and pop! The way it was meant to be! Well the least the way it sound after it's been played a few million times, lived through several moves, stored in the rafters and brought out and dusted off long after the cover turned to rat housing.

This was recorded during the youthful days of Ramleh. The following is from Mundy's liner notes to the BF boxset:

" 'The Hand of Glory' EP had been recorded prior to that Newcastle gig with Peter McGhee at IPS again. Jerome was getting very into reading about medieval torture and satanic rituals at this time. I was getting more interested in concepts of morality and freedom. My influence came through more in our next phase but Hand of Glory is more Jerome's subject-wise. Musically it was very much a joint effort. The vocals are less like the previous Ramleh records, they sound more desperate than angry. The talking on 'Prossneck' is Jerome. Most of the moaning is me, I think. It's a curious record. It's very uncomfortable listening without completely trying to blast you out of your chair. It was the last recording of ours that I would call 'power electronics'. The tape was probably better in many ways as the 7" version with around 10 minutes per side suffered slightly in terms of the sound but some people seemed to prefer it that way."

Sorry, your stuck with the vinyl here.

Factrix - Scheintot

Adolescent Records, 1981

Factrix - was a pioneering experimental /Industrial music group from San Francisco (members Bond Bergland, Cole Palme, and Joseph T. Jacobs) who formed in 1978 from another seminal post-punk act, Minimal Man (Patrick Miller). As Factrix, the group released a number of subversive and 'dangerous' recordings in the early '80s. Their incredible 'Scheintot' LP was a document of morbid, moody, and subtle experimental rock that is as eerily unsettling today as it must have been way back in 1981 when it was initially released. Scheintot was released on Adolescent Records (AR-TT-009) in 1981. This was also released on the "Artifact" 2xcd in 2003 on Storm ( STRM 08). A collection of both studio and rare live/unreleased material.

Giancarlo Toniutti - La Mutazione

Broken Flag, 1985

Giancarlo Toniutti is born in Udine (friuli - italy), 21.3.1963 researcher in morphology and anthropology fields (linguistics, acoustics, material cultures etc.) and composer of experimental electroacoustic sound-works. Basically. The whole activity is centred on a basic notion, which is connected to an anthropologic view of the human activity in general, of its knowledge and the tools enabling and structuring such a knowledge. The sound activity is thus linked to a realm of sound we could simplistically define as electroacoustic or equally experimental, although these notions may have a meaning. The sound work, through the diverse natural developmental phases, is focused on some problems and notions both inherent to the nature of sounds and their structuring and articulation in sound forms. A research connected to the acoustics of materials, chosen as sound sources or generators, materials by now almost only of an acoustic kind (natural objects, custom-made objects and natural sound sources recorded on field). The work is thus strictly connected to the acoustic-morphologic nature of the sound sources, and the action is directed to allow and/or induce such sources to generate sound (microcompositional aspect), in the observance of the inner characters of the materials and their forms. At the same time a research on the notions of form linked to its functions of an anthropologic (and somehow biologic) character, on which a work related to the sound morphologies fits (macrocomposition), almost exclusively connected to analogic means of action onto sound (magnetic tape and equalization, for example). Has xollaborated with Andrew Chalk and Conrad Schnitzler.

Sad News from Nigel Ayers (Nocturnal Emission), Monday, 14.July.2008 : I’m sorry to have to report that Caroline K (aka Caroline Kaye Walters) died during treatment for leukaemia in hospital in Pisa on Saturday evening. She was suddenly taken ill and diagnosed with leukaemia a very few days ago. The hospital did all they could for her. Caroline was a long term friend and co-founder of Nocturnal Emissions back in 1980. She married my brother Danny in 2001 and they moved together to Italy that year. They lived with numerous dogs, cats and chickens in a small friendly village in Tuscany. I last spoke to her on Friday and remained in email contact. Caroline was aware of the seriousness of her condition but remained extraordinarily positive and lucid. She chose to keep her illness private and spent her last few days in hospital painting and writing songs.

The Nocturnal Emissions - Deathday

Sterile Records - 1981

Nocturnal Emissions has been one of the best kept secrets of the industrial genre since the 1970s. Led by Nigel Ayers, the band was one of the first to use tape cutting, avant-garde art, and underground video works to create a stage experience that was being cultivated by like-minded artists like Throbbing Gristle and Cabaret Voltaire. The band moved on to using samplers and electronic noise in their early '80s work, creating a twisted funk sound that would go on to influence everyone from Foetus to Negativland. They still utilized their former tricks, upping the ante with extremist performance art and more professional video displays. The group avoided signing to a major label, instead focusing on releasing their own music more effectively. They followed this path into the '90s when they started earthlydelights, an incredibly detailed website that promotes their various ideologies (they are strongly against the British monarchy and believe that citizens should have unlimited access to space travel) and constant release schedule. The band has released countless tapes and CDs of their material, and continues to unleash their noise through their website. Deathday was released on Sterile Records (SRC 03) in 1981. Recorded live 23 May 1981 at the Cave, Corsham, Wiltshire.

Cabaret Voltaire - Three Mantras

Rough Trade, 1980

It would actually be more accurate to call this album 'Two Mantras,' given that it consists of two sidelong pieces, "Eastern Mantra" and "Western Mantra," which gives the still-then-a-trio a chance to expand its avant-electronic-grunge into trancier realms. "Western Mantra" has the basic trio, plus guests on percussion and found-sound tapes, doing something far more outre. A heavily-treated vocal loop underlaid by a subtle keyboard drone starts the song, interspersed with samples of Arabic and Israeli pop music and various bell sounds. The occasional bursts of low, clattering pounding, with cymbals if not with drums in the background, combined with the continuing series of song samples, Arabic wind instruments and snippets recorded in a Jerusalem market, heightens the enveloping, striking feel of the piece and release as a whole.

Bain Total, 1978

Die Form is the primary project of the French electronic musician and multimedia artist Phillipe Fichot. He began by recording a number of experimental cassette releases in the late 1970s, with the first Die Form album proper ('Die Puppe') appearing in 1982. Whilst the project was still in its infancy, the underlying concepts were still evident - a combination of esoteric electronic experiments with an underlying theme of erotism, death and other 'taboo' subjects, apparent in both the music and the album artwork, which Phillpe also produces.

Mauthausen Orchestra - Bloodyminded

Aquilifer Sodality, 1984

One of the early Italian power-electronics projects, Mauthausen Orchestra, in the person of Pierpaolo Zoppo, started in 1982, releasing tapes on his own label Aquilifer Sodality. His work explored morbid subjects, usually extreme sex, perversion, tortures and disease, and the sound was a brutal collage of noise, electronics distortions and inhuman vocals. Mauthausen Orchestra stopped in 1986, some recordings from 1988 were published ten years later by Xn Recordings. In 1997 Zoppo resurrected the project and released some new material, while a series of reissues of the early cassettes was published by Slaughter Productions.

Various - Sinn & Form

Datenverarbeitung, 1982

Here's another early compilation tape on Datenverarbeitung (DATA 0015) from 1982. The tape is split up in two sections side A being Sinn and is the industrial side of the tape, and Side B being Form the experimental side.

Esplendor Geométrico : We would have to go back to 1978 to find the origins of one of the most innovative and risky proposals of the Spanish electronic - industrial scene, and one of the few with international repercussion. In those days, a History student (Arturo Lanz), a prison officer (Gabriel Riaza) and a graphic designer (Juan Carlos Sastre) were forming part of a weird band called El Aviador Dro y sus Obreros Especializados whose, with a look near to Devo, a corporative - futuristic - revolutionary ideology and a music influenced by Kraftwerk, Pere Ubu,The Residents, the synth-pop of the moment and some industrial drops, would become one of the milestones of the Spanish movida madrileña in the early 80's, and the first Spanish tecno-pop band, founding one of the first indie labels. But before they would become famous in the country, Lanz, Riaza and Sastre left the band in 1980 after releasing two 7'', due to the serious internal discrepancies with the rest of the collective, and quickly organized their own band, which they baptized with a name taken from a futuristic poem: Esplendor Geométrico.

Nocturnal Emissions : Influential and uncompromising, Nigel Ayers chooses to remain underground even as his ideas are continuously appropriated by ambitious pop culture surface dwellers. Since founding the UK art music ensemble Nocturnal Emissions in 1980, Nigel has established an incredible discography of music that is as diverse as Nocturnal Emissions is durable.

M.B. : Born : December 04, 1955 // Pomponesco, Mantua, Italy
Maurizio Bianchi from Milano, Italy, started working in 1979 using pre-recorded filtered sounds and in 1980 bought his own electronic equipment to "produce technological sounds to work for a full awareness of modern decadence".

P16.D4 : Was a German band whose music bordered on the industrial and on the cacophonous. On their debut album "Kühe In 1/2 Trauer" (Selektion, 1982) they managed to fuse the playful irrationality of dadaism and the oppressive tones of expressionism. Roger Schönauer and Ewald Weber focused on an austere art and technique of loop and tape manipulation. Stefan E. Schmidt joined the ensemble on Distruct (Selektion,1995), a deconstructing remix of sound sources provided by friends of the industrial scene. The double album Nichts Niemand Nirgends Nie (1985) delved into musique concrete and electronic improvisation but, like the previous ones, ended up sounding more theoretical than emotional stuff. Tionchor (Sonoris, 1987) collects revised rarities, and is probably their most successful albums, precisely because it offers a variety of ideas instead of an obsessive analysis of one idea. Acrid Acme (Selektion, 1989).

Nurse With Wound - Chance Meeting On A Dissecting Table Of A Sewing Machine And An Umbrella

United Dairies, 1979

Nurse With Wound is the recording vehicle driven by londoner Steve Stapleton and together with many other projects, have been released on his own United Dairies label. This debut release begins it's tale in the latter half of 1978. Stapleton was going about his daily buisness working as a signwriter and and found himself working at a central london recording studio. Legend has it that he got into a lengthy conversation about avant-garde and experimental musics with the in-house engineer, one Nicky Rogers. Their talk got around to Rogers commenting something along the lines of- "if you know of any groups or people who want to record some of that stuff then let me know". Stapleton, blinded by satori and possessing enough youthful savvy- replied that HE had an 'experimental group' together and asked if the offer was still open, Rogers then repying that the next weekend would be fine. Of Course, he hadn't made any music before (having been a "deep listener" and vinyl junkie) and hastily got in touch with his two friends John Fothergill and Heeman Pathak, telling them to get hold of some musical instruments...ANYTHING! Sure enough, they scurried around in the next couple of days having bought and aquired cheap guitars, ring modulators, effects pedals, a lumbering Keyboard, toys, tools, household appliances and entered the studio as arranged.Without having a 'practise' as such, other than a level soundcheck, they drew in their breath and recorded their first album in six hours, totally improvised apart from a few overdubs, one being the 'commercial guitar' laid down by engineer Nicky Rogers, which was part of the cut-price deal! The album was released in the summer of 1979 and together with it's striking S&M themed artwork (by Stapleton), it soon shifted the initial 500 pressings in a matter of weeks.

Whitehouse - Birthdeath Experience

Come Organisation, 1980

Whitehouse specialise in what they call "extreme electronic music". They are known for their controversial lyrics and imagery, which portray sadistic sex, misogyny, serial murder, eating disorders, child abuse, and other forms of violence and abjection.

Whitehouse emerged as earlier U.K. "industrial" acts such as Throbbing Gristle and SPK were pulling back from noise and extreme sounds and making their music more conventional. In opposition to this trend, Whitehouse wanted to take these earlier groups' sounds and fascination with extreme subject matter even farther. In doing so, they drew inspiration from some earlier experimental musicians and artists such as Alvin Lucier, Robert Ashley, and Yoko Ono as well as writers such as Marquis de Sade.

The signature sonic elements on their early recordings are simple, pulverizing electronic bass tones twinned with needling high frequencies, sometimes combined with ferocious washes of white noise, with or without vocals (usually barked orders, sinister whispers, and high-pitched screams).

Here is a picture of William Bennett from 1983:

Throbbing Gristle - The Second Annual Report

Industrial Records, 1977

Throbbing Gristle's confrontational live performances and use of often disturbing imagery, including pornography and photographs of Nazi concentration camps, gave the group a notorious reputation. However the group always maintained that their mission was to challenge and explore the darker and obsessive sides of the human condition rather than to make attractive music. Throbbing Gristle pioneered the use of pre-recorded tape-based 'samples', and made extensive use of special effects to produce a distinctive, highly distorted background, usually accompanied by lyrics or spoken-word performances by Genesis P-Orridge. Though they asserted they wanted to provoke their audience into thinking for themselves rather than pushing any specific agenda (as evidenced by the song "Don't Do As You're Told, Do As You Think" on Heathen Earth), Throbbing Gristle also frequently associated with the anarchist punk scene. They even appeared on the infamous Crass pamphlet Toxic Grafity, with a condensation of their own propaganda parody series, Industrial News.

In 1977 they released their debut recording, The Second Annual Report. Although pressed in a limited initial run of 786 copies on the band's own Industrial Records label, it was later re-released due to high demand on Mute records, however this later release was reversed with all tracks playing backwards and in reverse order. This was followed by a series of albums, singles and live performances over a four year period.

Bienvenidos . Welcome

Bienvenidos . Welcome

Saludos.
